My current project for the Scrambler (besides getting it to actually run) is to upgrade the rear axle to a Dana 60. I have been looking for a good candidate for a rear axle swap for over a year. With the 35" tires the D44s will hold up just fine but I would like to go larger in the future. Most of the full float Dana 60s I have found to be 30 spline (same as D44) and 8 lug. I would like to keep the 5 on 5.5 bolt pattern and find a D60 with 35 spline axles, the only specific years I was aware of this this axle are in the 69-73 Jeep J trucks. The odd-ball Dana 53 proceeded this axle as the heavy duty semi-float in the Gladiators until 68' and 74'+, the J10 and J20 designations started and a semi-float dana 60 was not offered. The opportunity came up to get this bad boy in Connecticut when talking on ifsja.org and I grabbed it for a hundred bucks!

I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO THANK, WITH SINCERE AND VERY SPECIAL GRATITUDE, JASON DAVIS AND BRIAN VIBERT FOR NOT ONLY PROVIDING THE SWEET DEAL BUT THESE TWO FINE PHOTOGRAPHS AS WELL.

As you can see, this axle is off set and the driverside measures 6" longer than the pass side. The total width of this axle is 66". This axle is designated a Dana 60-2 as a "medium" duty axle and is unique being a semi-float, 5 lug, 35 spline, 1.5" shafts in a Dana 60.

Here is a comparo shot of 35 and 30 shafts (I know, lousy pic)

Offroad.com has an article on swapping this axle into a CJ (but they have the available years wrong): http://www.off-road.com/jeep/tech/convaxle/d60.html

Here's some info from my dana/spicer book:

For the "medium" truck dana 60 there are 4.10 and 4.88 ratios with either standard, Powr-Lok or Trac--Lok carriers. For the axle shafts RH P# is 35508-1 and LH is 33508-2. 1.5", 35 spline 5 on 5.5, RH is 29-7/32" and LH is 35-25/32".

The bill of material numbers stamped on the tube, to the right of the diff cover will indicate ratio and carrier.
standard 4.10 = 603137-1
Powr-Lok 4.10 = 603137-5
Trac-Lok 4.10 = 603137-7
standard 4.88 = 603137-2
Powr-Lok 4.88 = 603137-6
Trac-Lok 4.88 = 603137-8

More part numbers for 603137:
Inboard shaft seal - 35512
Wheel bearing retainer ring - 35961
Wheel bearing assembly - 565904
Outboard shaft seal - 35511

Also, here's some info from an old Dana 60 service manual:

"Here are some sources i found and the part numbers, perhaps you could revise your page.

"The bearing retainer for the axle , dana # 35961  is available for $4.00 each from Moser Engineering   http://www.moserengineering.com/contact-us

"they were also to shorten and respline my axle for $65.00     I got a Timken bearing, part # RSN1584EV  from Rock Auto, about $75.00 ea ( ouch!)

"The Seals were a challenge, they have been discontinued by Dana,   But i was able to get them from Chicago Rawhide (SKF)   part numbers 17386  (inner) and  21244 (OUTER)  the seals were $9-$10 each.   and are  available from  http://www.bdiexpress.com/
